Kiss Each Other Clean
Anyone who knows me knows that I’m a huge fan of Iron & Wine. Trapeze Swinger is one of my favourite songs of all time and seeing him live was a definite highlight. So when his new album Kiss Each Other Clean leaked a few days ago, I could not wait to hear what was next. After a few listens, I’m unsure of whether it works entirely for me yet. The new direction that he’s taken stylistically is promising but I still find myself longing for more of his poetic nostalgia, something that he still does in songs like Tree By The River so well. Having become such a fan of his minimalistic sound on early albums, I guess that it takes some adjustment. With that said, it does feel like a logical expansion of his previous effort The Shepherd’s Dog. I’ll give it a few more chances because Sam Beam is nothing short of incredible but as it stands right now, the album does leave me wanting a little more. The initial highlight is the album’s closer, which sounds like nothing he’s ever done before (much like the rest of the album). Your Fake Name Is Good Enough ends with as epic a call-to-arms as I’ve ever heard from Sam Beam. I like it. Just not too sure about the rest right now. Listen below:
