Concert season in Toronto: Frightened Rabbit at Horseshoe Tavern (July 22, 2009)
by Shawn on Jul.24, 2009, under Concert Reviews
Scottish indie band Frightened Rabbit rocked the Horseshoe Tavern last night with a set that contained many of their infectious hits from “The Midnight Organ Fight” and a few from “Sing the Greys”. The venue was packed and even though the speaker on the right side of the room was ridiculously loud (so much so that we had to slowly move left throughout the whole night), the night was great!
Initial openers Our Brother The Native had me scratching my head saying “wtf?” with their songs that sounded like an annoying combination of Animal Collective and Explosions in the Sky. The second act, The Antlers, blew me away (as evidenced by my CD review in the previous post). And Frightened Rabbit was everything I expected them to be, indie rock with a distinctive Scottish flair (I didn’t understand what he was saying half the time).
The songs had the crowd moving and shouting and as evidenced by the videos I’m posting, everyone was having a good time. The videos below are of “Old Old Fashioned”, “Backwards Walk”, and an incredible acoustic version of “Poke” that was played for the encore at the end of the night.
(Sorry about the shakiness of the last video. It was either my arm getting weak or me being overcome with emotion, lol).
Stay tuned for a Walkmen review this weekend!
Concert season in Toronto: Arkells at Sound Academy (July 17, 2009)
by Shawn on Jul.18, 2009, under Concert Reviews
My concert season in Toronto started off with a bang: Arkells at Sound Academy (presented by The Edge at Bookie’s Big Blast). The band from Hamilton definitely did not disappoint as headliners. They rocked hard and considering that I only knew 2 of their songs going in, I was pleasantly surprised. The guitars were on point, the vocals sounded as great as on their album (which I purchased after the concert, a limited edition purple vinyl), and they just reminded me of why I love Canadian rock. Hopefully there’s a lot more to come. My favourite of the night? The Ballad Of Hugo Chavez (complete with a loud audience singalong). Here’s the music video for the song:
The venue of Sound Academy was as confusing as always and the bathroom attendant was screaming about female genitalia all night, but overall, a great night! And there’s only more to come with Frightened Rabbit on Wednesday and The Walkmen on Friday! Stay tuned!
