My Love Was There

by Shawn on Nov.02, 2009, under The Music That I Love

I don’t listen to the radio very often but when I do, it’s always set to The Edge. Most of the time, that means I’m listening to the Foo Fighters and the same Nirvana song at least 5 times a day, but sometimes, I’m able to hear something phenomenal that I’ve never heard before. Here’s some great Canadian rock from a band called The Junction (hailing from Brampton, Ontario of all places, lol). It caught my attention right away and didn’t let go until it’s 4 minutes were through. Loving the lyrics (“and if you hear my song, sing along”), the riff, the handclaps, it all comes together great. Reminds me of early Sam Roberts. Give it a listen.

Concert season in Toronto: Arkells at Sound Academy (July 17, 2009)

by Shawn on Jul.18, 2009, under Concert Reviews

My concert season in Toronto started off with a bang: Arkells at Sound Academy (presented by The Edge at Bookie’s Big Blast). The band from Hamilton definitely did not disappoint as headliners. They rocked hard and considering that I only knew 2 of their songs going in, I was pleasantly surprised. The guitars were on point, the vocals sounded as great as on their album (which I purchased after the concert, a limited edition purple vinyl), and they just reminded me of why I love Canadian rock. Hopefully there’s a lot more to come. My favourite of the night? The Ballad Of Hugo Chavez (complete with a loud audience singalong). Here’s the music video for the song:

The venue of Sound Academy was as confusing as always and the bathroom attendant was screaming about female genitalia all night, but overall, a great night! And there’s only more to come with Frightened Rabbit on Wednesday and The Walkmen on Friday! Stay tuned!
