Isaiah Rashad – West Savannah (ft. SZA)

Isaiah Rashad, one of the newer faces on Top Dawg Entertainment, released his Cilvia Demo earlier this week. While the album certainly shares a lot of influences with his labelmates Schoolboy Q and Kendrick Lamar, the song “West Savannah” stands out on its own as a dreamy example of Isaiah Rashad’s own potential sound. Borrowing from the ethereal sample of Iman Omari‘s “Energy” (part of the standout compilation Saint Heron, released late last year), Rashad sings wistfully “Can we fall in love while Southernplayalistic’s banging through the night?”. A sentiment shared by many who grew up on the Outkast classic. Its short length seems a perfect match for the atmosphere it creates, an atmosphere which labelmate SZA gracefully adds some smoothness to in the background. With the track and the demo as a whole, Rashad just goes to show you that TDE is really moving hip hop forward.
